Whether you want to add dimension overtop your current carpet, or you want to soften up your hardwood floors or tile, area rugs are an easy, efficient way to enhance a home. They add extra grip for stairs, help improve home acoustics if you have hardwood or tile, and add a pop of personality to a space that can really tie it together. And while you could just buy any rug, plop it onto the ground, and call it a day, we are here to help you learn how to style area rugs to enhance your home.
Size Matters
When it comes to styling area rugs, size is crucial before you hit that purchase button or get an employee to ring you out at the store. If a rug is too big or small for the room you are decorating, it can overpower the room or simply look ill-fitted. To avoid this, start by measuring the size of the room. You want your rug to maintain a gap of at least 8 inches and up to 24 inches from the room. It should be noted that the smaller the room, the smaller this gap will be. We are happy to help you find the right size rug if you bring us the correct measurements of the room.
Make Sure Furniture Sits On Top
Our next tip when it comes to styling area rugs is to make sure that furniture can be placed on top of the length and width of the rug. That is, you want your rug to extend under all the key pieces of furniture in a room. Otherwise, the rug might look off-kilter in the space. It’s important to note that the back legs can be off of the rug if the furniture pieces is large (TV stands, couches, and so on, but make sure to keep the front legs on the rug. All smaller-legged pieces (end tables, coffee tables, and so on) should be fully on the rug.
As an example, a rug in a dining room should be large enough that all the dining chairs and table can rest comfortably on it. The chairs should also remain on the rug even when pulled out. If they are far from the rug when pulled out, the rug isn’t big enough for the space.
Keep it Equal
Last but not least, you want to make sure that there is an equal amount of floor space on all sides of your rug, if possible. The goal with area rugs is to have them be centered in the room and frame the space. Otherwise, we run into the issue of the rug either overpowering the space or looking like it is far too small. Making sure that the rug can extend to all livable pieces of the room (couches, chairs, tables) will help ensure that the space balances out.
